March 13, 2009 Our Ironman Drake was in perfect mode today! He laid so still the technicians could not believe it. Drake had a strap around his forehead in the Brain SPECT Scan but needed no tape for the MRI machine. He was on a role today, in great spirits and determined to get through the testing as quickly as possible. When he was done with all the testing in record time today we asked him what he would like to do on a Friday night in CA. "I would like to have California Chinese." Since he had not been able to eat all day we thought that was the least we could do for our HERO!

Life just gets busy...
Back to school, raising the farm critters, Special Olympics, 4-H and all the other things teenage boys do!
Drake has continued to show improvement on so many levels since his Moya Moya surgeries in September of 2008. His speech and memory has improved greatly. He recalls events better than mom and dad! Drake has improved his math and reading ability and continues to love school.
We have had good intentions of keeping the web site updated but time and life does fly by. As you read future journal entries you just might find we will move back in history to fill you in from Sept 2008 to March 2009. But all in all life has been full of many BLESSINGS as we continue on Drake's amazing journey of LIFE. Life truly is for the living and Drake knows how to fill it to the brim!
We have returned to Stanford Medical Center in California for a week of follow up testing after Drake's surgeries. We will post daily on Drake's Caring Bridge site as the week goes by to keep in touch with our many family and friends. We hope for good news and Drake continues to improve his many skills.
He is as happy and determined as ever. Always a smile and a spirit about him that can take on anything. Please pray for his continued progress as we reconnect with our many doctors and support staff here at Stanford. As you well know...we truly BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF PRAYER!!

Wednesday morning brought a call from Robert Dicks asking us if Drake could return to the hospital for an interview with the San Jose, CA Mercury Newspaper "The Mercury News". We met with reporter Linda Goldston and photographer Karen Borchers to share Drake's story and to speak with Dr. Steinberg. Drake was interviewed for an article that will be out this weekend - Sept 26 or 27, 2008.

We thought a little celebration was in order after the last clinic visit and the "OK" to head back east

to Illinois. We found a restaurant that advertised "The Best Texas Barbecue Around". Low and Behold Drake was able to eat with "The Duke". Drake was thrilled when we walked in and a picture of John Wayne was on the wall.

Drake turned in his final folder for this trip. Drake pointed to his shirt to inform the lady behind the desk he was going home to Illinois. Drake wore his cowboy boots and the Illinois shirt his Uncle Dave sent him last week to the clinic visit. Drake wanted everyone to know that the purpose of this trip was to be released from the medical care and head back home to Illinois!

Drake and his family were able to see the results of the final MRI taken on Sunday 9/21/08 at the clinic visit on Tuesday 9/23/08. All looked good, just a little swelling on the right side of the brain which is normal at this stage of recovery.

The final clinic visit at Dr. Steinberg's office. Teresa Bell-Stephens, the Nurse Coordinator for Dr. Steinberg's office, was testing Drake for strength and endurance. He passed with flying colors! Teresa then told Drake it was official...he could return home and start doing chores at the barn again! Drake just wanted to know when he could go back to school again and start doing homework!

Drake returned to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital for his last MRI on Sunday, September 21, 2008. Drake had written a note to give to the doctors. He wanted them to use small band aides so they would not stick so hard when he went to take them off! He suggested they use the small circle one from Curaid like the ones his mom uses when he gets hurt.

Drake has met many new friends during his stay at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. Tom MacCrae, ACU, was always near by filling in with a extra hand when needed. Tom has a picture of his little boy on the back of his name tag so Drake wanted to know a little about him. When you spend a lot of time in one area you come to know many personal stories of each others families. That is a wonderful touch and makes you feel at ease. The ICU was family focused. We always felt informed of Drake's care and part of the process. They helped you feel as comfortable as possible given the situation.

Friday Morning Sept 19, 2008

Drake has been blessed with many letters and cards sent by his family and friends back home. Drake looked forward to the mail everyday. Friday morning he opened a envelope from his classmates back in Dunlap, IL. All of the students in his Life Skills class wrote Drake a note and each letter had different pictures of Ironman. Ironman has become Drake's new nick name and favorite movie charactor. Doc Nathan and Nurse Nabila looked on as Drake was excited about the pictures and letters. Doc Nathan read all the letters to Drake. They all agreed that Lee had excellent handwriting. Good job Lee!

Thank you to Mrs. Carrier's Class for all the wonderful notes and letters to cheer Drake on! Thank you also to Doc Nathan and Nabila for making Drakes' going home morning a very bright day!

Drake always is ready to entertain the pretty nurses! Friday morning Sept 19th Drake was feeling like his old, or should we say... like a new man again! Drake was awake and felling great. As you can tell from the big smile he was ready to go! Nurses Nabila and Christy were cheering Drake on as he found out he could go home this morning. Nabila started working on the paperwork to discharge Drake out of the ICU. Out came the last of the IV's and into street cloths. Weekend at home, here we come!

Dr. Sabati, the Pediatric Resident, was always near by to answer questions and continued to check on Drake. Dr. Sabati was part of the great team caring for Drake in the ICU unit. The circle of care given to Drake was outstanding.

The day after the blood transfusion and Drake was feeling better and stronger. Dad brought over The Three Stooges movies to the hospital and you could hear Drake laughing at the silly stunts! (It's a guy thing...!)

Doc Nathan Morrell and Drake have found out they have a lot in common! They are both from the Midwest, Nathan from Wisconsin and Drake from Illinois but most of all they love red jeeps! Of course, let’s not forget the snow! Drake has always dreamed of driving a red jeep. He talks about it all the time. After Doc Nathan stopped by to get to know Drake he shared about the times he drove his red jeep in Wisconsin with the top off and could throw the best snowballs from it! Drake later learned Nathan went to Grandpa Taylor’s Alma Mater – Notre Dame! This further led to the discussion of lepercons…the mascot of Notre Dame! The stories could have gone on forever but Drake finally lost his steam and was ready for a snooze.

Things are looking better...well maybe...

Drake's had some ups and downs on Wednesday, Sept 17, 2008.

Drake was taking a little more time bouncing back from the second surgery. Drake's heart rate and blood pressure was not stabilizing and his red blood cell count was down. The doctors and nurses were keeping close watch over Drake as the day passed on. Agnes, Drake's day nurse, was a wonderful source of energy and comfort. She made Drake's day when she starting removing the IV lines and central line in his neck. As Drake felt his freedom he began to move around more and gained his desire to eat! It is Agnes Birthday Day September 18th.

Dr. Steinberg came up and talked with us and told us all went as planned. Dr. Steinberg was able to correct both areas with one larger insicion.

We were able to see Drake in the intensive care unit. Drake woke up several times this afternoon and wanted to sit up and look around. His blood pressure remains stable. He is on a nasel oxygen unit but otherwise doing great!

9:00 pm thru Evening - Night

A night of alarms, medication, doctors, and stress. Blood pressure and heart rate issues. Restless night of sleep for Drake.

Drake has received much support and encouragement from many people over these last few months. The Dunlap Middle School is very close to his heart. The school's principle, staff, teachers and students have gone above and beyond to cheer Drake on by sending him notes and emails to brighten up his days at Stanford.

They have also blessed Drake and his family with financial support. The school began a campaign called "Change for Drake" The students donated coins to help support Drake on his trip to Stanford Medical Center to see Dr. Steinberg. Over $4,500 was raise to help offset the expenses in California.

What a wonderful and generous gift to give to a fellow student. Drake and his family are very touched by the support of Dunlap Middle School!

Meet The Anathesiologists for the 2nd Surgery...

Drake was greeted this morning by his team of Doctors. Dr. Berta, part of Dr. Steinberg's team, checked up on Drake first. He was please with the healing of the first surgical area on the left side. We then met the Anathesiologists for the operation. Pictured on the left of Drake is Dr. Hsieh and to the right is Dr. Yamout. Both of the doctors were great and put Drake at ease. They admired Drake's drawing of the Ironman mask he had just finished. The two doctors answered a few questions and then rolled Drake off to the surgical area at 7:30 am. Drake is in good hands once again!

Tuesday Morning Sept. 16, 2008 2nd Surgery

Drake arrived at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at 6:oo am Tuesday morning for his pre-surgery prep. As you can see from his smile he was calm, cool and collected. He brought along his Ironman notebook and pencil so he could draw some pictures while he waited for the doctors to arrive.
They drew an "R" on the right side of Drake head so the doctors knew were to start. We told Drake he had his official War Paint and was ready for action! Drake was roiled away to the surgical area at 7:30 am and was still drawing pictures as they wheeled him through the doors!

SECOND BRAIN SURGERY Sept. 16, 2008 7:30 am

The second brain surgery is scheduled for September 16 at 7:30 am with Dr. Gary Steinberg at Stanford Medical Center. We are scheduled to arrive at 6:00 am for pre-surgery prep. This surgery is for the correction of the right side brain blood vessels. Drake will have two surgical areas on the right side. We are hopeful the recovery will be as smooth as the left side.

We ask for your prayers in the guidance of the doctors and surgical team as Drake goes through the second round of surgery. Please pray for strength, safety and comfort for Drake in the days ahead.

We enjoyed our visit to the Webb Ranch Sunday to watch the Horse Show. As you can see, we felt right at home. We watched the horses and viewed the grounds with the California mountains in the back ground. It is a beautiful area for a ranch. As you enter the ranch driving towards the horse stable area you pass large areas of organic gardens and composting. The ranch has very natural and peaceful surroundings and is tucked away in a valley of the Los Altos Hills.

MEET TRIGGER...Carol's Four Legged Buddy

Carol has a new love in her life...TRIGGER! Trigger is a beautiful Palomino Horse she stables at the Webb Ranch. Trigger was getting ready for his first horse show at the Webb Ranch and was spending time with his buddy Carol before his big ride. Drake loved to meet up with Trigger as he has ridden many horses with the therapeutic riding program CIRT in East Peoria, IL. Drake also owns his own mini horse by the name of Brownie. Brownie is being taken care of by our dear friend Janet back on her farm in Illinois.

Meet Betty!
Friday night was a night to chill and relax and hang out with Betty. Betty is Carol's dog who is now Drake's best buddy. They watch a show together, walk around the back yard and just pal around. I think Betty is waiting for Drake to drop a few crumbs her way! Betty is a wonderful dog who now has Drake working on Mom to get a dog for the barn when we return home. Surprise!

Friday night the UPS truck arrived and a box to Drake Taylor was handed over. Interesting..."Open it up Drake, I'm not sure who it is from!" Much to every one's surprise there was a big, no HUGE, fortune cookie! The coolest part of the fortune cookie was the picture of Drake's Dunlap Middle School Life Skills classmates holding up the "We Love Our Little Iron Man" signs and two pictures of the real Iron Man! What a great Friday night! We encouraged him to open it but he said it was "Too Cool!" and wanted to save it. Drake will have to open it soon to read his fortune!

Thank you to Mrs. Carrier, Mrs. Theobald, Mrs. Best and all our Buddies from the Dunlap Middle School Life Skills Class! Drake say, "I MISS YOU!".

The Paddle Boat Work Out!!

Drake spotted the paddle boats off the shore edge of the Shoreline Park Reserve Lake and thought we should go for a ride! We figured Dad would do all the work with Drake and I just laying back and enjoying the scenery! So we climb into the paddle boat with Dad in the front on one side and Drake in the front to steer. Mom climbed into the back behind Drake and we were ready to go! "Come on Dad...lets go!" Oh...one problem...Dad's feet could not fit into the peddle slots. You have got to be kidding! By now it was clear we were going no where! Either Mom had to buck up to the front and take control of the situation or the trip was over! OK...this could be scary. Mom had to move to the front, Dad to the back and Drake was clearly off the hook because he could not reach the peddles. So as you can see from the pictures Drake was relaxed, cool and calm, none of this phasing him one bit! We eventually moved things around (meaning Mom & Dad) and paddled the paddle boat around the lake. We did not wonder too far, since this was a one man...no, I mean woman show...I was afraid we might not make it back!!

Shoreline Park...September 12,2008 Friday

Friday afternoon was a beatiful opportunity to venture out once again. We were in search of water, boats and CA scenery! Carol told us about Shoreline Park, a wonderful wildlife preserve just 5 miles from our "Home Away From Home". It is a great 544 acre park with a 55 acre salt lake located in the center of the preserve. Drake loved sitting by the water and watching the birds. It was hard to believe the preserve was once a land fill for the surrounding cities. The wildlife was abundant!

Drake spent some time making jewelry and just relaxing on Thursday. He was teaming up with Dad to help bend the tops and coordinate some new beads sent by his Aunt Barb and Aunt Brenda from an Atlanta, GA Art Sow they had attended.

Watching a movie and some quality down time rounded out the day. We want Drake to be well rested for the second round of surgery.

It was a gentle ride down the mountain back to the train station. Drake watched the engineer pour more water into the holding box. Drake then waved as the engine pulled away to it's resting place.

The Train stopped on top of the mountain allowing an opportunity to walk through the Forest. To feel, touch and walk among the splendor was great. Drake walked around always looking up! It was beautiful!

Drake was amazed at the size of the tree that was laying on the ground. Randy took a good picture showing the width of the fallen tree.

The Redwood Forest was so thick that when you looked up only the sun beams could be seen through the branches!

What a Beautiful, Majestic, Wonderful Place!

It was a picture to behold. The Steam floating through the trees, the trees reaching to the sky, the peace of the land and the power of the steam engine. Truly an experience everyone should encounter. Even though there were many passengers, most were silent and taking hold of the presence and experience.

Less than 30 miles away is a whole new California Adventure...
The Roaring Camp Antique Steam Engine Train ventures into one of the virgin Redwood Forest of California. We arrived Wednesday morning for the 11:00am train ride and boarded the open air train car for the best view. It was much cooler there so it was a good thing we brought along the jackets! The Steam Engine roared and whistled as it pulled up for us to come on board. It was one amazing adventure! Drake handed the conductor our tickets and off we went...

A Veiw of the Ocean...

Drake has asked about the ocean ever since he saw a map and realized the ocean water was very near by. A short 25 minute ride and Drake was at the water's edge! It was cool so the jacket went on very quickly! The sky was overcast and Drake arrive at the marine reserve at the water's low tide. Beautiful and Breath Taking! We sat just watching and taking it all in. A perfect day! We were the only ones there for a long time so it was a very restful place.

Drake spent a relaxing weekend at Carol's home. We grilled some dinners and made some jewelry. On Sunday we went to the Mountain View Art & Craft Show were Drake found a shirt and pair of socks he loved! The gentleman then traded Drake an Illinois dollar for a California tie-died dollar!

Drake is continueing to heal and rest. We are pleased and amazed with his recovery!

One Stop before leaving...

Drake had heard about the pond with the ducks from some of the nurses. As we started back to Carol's house Drake said, "We have to stop at the pond with the ducks Dad, I want to see the ducks like mine!" Sure enough, as we drove around to the Main entrance of the Stanford Hospital there were all the ducks! They did look just like Drake's but a lot bigger! After several pictures of the ducks Drake was ready to move on.

Drake left the hospital about 9:00 am Friday Morning 9/5/08 just 3 days after the brain surgery. Drake was looking forward to going back to Carol's house. He wanted to give Betty (Carol's Dog) a big hug because he thought Betty might be missing him all this time!

The Ticket Out... Nurse Alison!

Nurse Alison had the magic tickets to get out of the hospital! Alison removed the last of the IV lines and checked Drake's final vital signs to give the "all clear" sign. Mom and Dad signed all the paperwork and Drake was on his way out about 9:00 am Friday morning!

Michelle, Drake's O.T., stopped by to say hello. She was checking up on Drake making sure he could dress himself and was returning to the independent Drake we all know so well. Drake gave Michelle a big hug and we asked her to check on Drake later (Sept 17th), he might need help to get out of bed again after the next surgery!

Dr. Steinburg stopped by to see Drake Thursday afternoon. He was very pleased with Drake's progress. Drake was sitting in the chair next to his bed and looked like he was ready to leave! Dr Steinberg said he would be discharged Friday morning which brought a big smile to Drake's face. Dr Steinberg then went over the surgery for the right side of the brain. He will be operating on two different areas on the right side. The first area will be similar to the the left side with an additional procedure on the top of the right side.

Drake has been blessed with wonderful nurses during his stay after the surgery. Nurse Evelyn (in the blue dress) was Drake's nurse all day Thursday. Nurse Corinne was the kind nurse that took the family picture of us today and helped fill in as the day went by.

Day Camp at the Hospital!

Drake stopped by The Painted Turtle Camp Outpost. The center was full of activities and crafts, lots of things to do! Drake went "fishing" and then "roasted some fish on the fire". He brought back some additional art supplies to finish back in his room. The Packard Children's Hospital is a truly a wonderful place focused on the child. The service, care and concern for Drake has been the best quality we have ever experienced. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE THAT HAVE WALKED THIS JOURNEY WITH DRAKE!

When Drake visited the water fountain Thursday on one of his walks he thought his ducks back home would really like a big water fountain too!

He began telling Mom and Dad how he would re-design the rocks, make the edges wider and move the fountain there....he had it all figured out! What a true sign of our Drake back to his old self! As many of you know, Drake is always coming up with projects for his Dad to make at the barn for his many animals!

Drake and Randy went for a long walk cruising the hallways of the third floor and then went to the main floor courtyard for some fresh air by the waterfall fountain. I think the nurses thought he had escaped! As you can see from the pictures all the IV lines and tubes are gone! Drake still has one IV in his left hand for any emergency but as you can see he is cruisin'!!

Drake was happy to see Dr. Ashley return later Thursday morning to remove the staples and check the incision. Dr. Ashley also removed the bandage from his neck. Drake felt like a new man! Dr. Ashley is part of Dr. Steinbergs team and knows Drake's friends Conner and Brad who were here at Stanford in June of 2008 to have the same surgery.

Drake was resting quietly with all his new treasures. The blue prayer shawl/blanket from our home church ladies has been keeping Drake comfortable everyday in the hospital. He has received many complements on it! His horse from his cousins, his new buddy "Otter" and new Ironman shirts are simple reminders of the out pouring of love and support for Drake.

Good Morning! Here is to a Good Night too!

Drake slept soundly his first night out of the ICU. He woke up and took a walk down the hallways at 8:00 am this morning and returned to a good breakfast waiting for him. Drake had pancakes, eggs, and melon. The nasal oxygen tube has been removed and the levels are remaining were they need to be. The doctors stop by and were pleased with the progress. The swelling on the left side of Drake's face is already going down.

Meredith and her friend Sarah stop by this morning to wish Drake well. They are off to the University of Oregon (GO DUCKS) to return for the start of school. Meredith and Carol gave Drake two IRONMAN shirts that brought a big smile to his face. "Mom, I don't have any of those!" was Drake's reply as we held up the shirts for a picture.

Wednesday at noon, one day after the brain surgery, two very friendly ladies walked into Drake's room to see how he was doing. They started playing with Drake's new stuffed animal "Otter" and asking him to catch him, reach for him and grab his tail. The next thing we knew Drake was out of bed and taking a lap around the ICU area. Drake greeted the doctors and nurses with a big smile as he was cheered on by Karen, his Physical Therapist and Michelle, his Occupational Therapist. Michelle and Karen had Drake walking and rolling in no time at all!

Drake had a nice lunch and sat in the chair for about 1 1/2 hours. He then went back to bed for a nice nap! We remained in the ICU until about 2:00pm and then were moved up to the third floor to double hospital room.

Nurse Amy was Drake's attending nurse Tuesday night in the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Intensive Care Unit. Nurse Amy was so encouraging to Drake and made him feel comfortable. Drake was actually awake for this photo I just caught him with his eyes closed! Nurse Amy reminded Drake of Ms. Amy, a nurse at Ridgeview Elementary School in Dunlap Illinois. He commented, "they're both really nice Mom!" Thank you to both Amy's for making Drake feel special!

9/3/08 ONE DAY OUT OF SURGERY

Good morning! Drake had a fairly calm first night. A few minor issues with blood pressure and heart rate that were taken care of with small amounts of medication. Drake spent much of the day Tuesday dozing in and out. Sleeping very peaceful much of the time. At 5:00 am he woke up say, "I'm hungry!" and "When do I get out of here!" We figured that was a good sign!

As of 10:20 am we are still in ICU. Vital signs are stable and most of the IV lines are removed. He is on very little medication. He does have some swelling on the left side of his face and around his left eye. We figured that was to be excepted for all the movement of blood vessels and tissue during the surgery. Drake ate a hardy breakfast of pancakes, bacon, eggs and some melon around 9:30 am. He is now taking a little nap. We are hoping to be in a standard room later today.

The care here at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital has been excellent. The nurses and doctors are very attentive to Drake and his comfort. We are very pleased with the progress.

Thank you for your many thoughts and prayers. God has truly listened to the uplifting of Drake and his special needs. We have been truly BLESSED with wonderful doctors , nurses and sincere care since we have been here at Stanford.

We will update the blog and Caring Bridge when Drake is moved to the standard room later on today.

"Mom, it's still dark outside!"

Drake was up at 5:00am Tuesday morning getting ready to leave for Stanford Medical Hospital. We arrived at 6:00am to check-in and meet with the doctors.

Drake had his new buddy "Otter" with him from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and his prayer shawl from Northminster Presbyterian Church. He also had his little stuffed farm animals from his cousins to help him feel close to his barn back home.

Drake was very quite this morning until he saw Dr. Chen, his anathesiologist from Friday. Drake also met Dr. Berta, a doctor from the Steinberg Team.

Mom and Dad gave him a big huge at 7:50 am as he was wheeled off to the operating area. We are now sitting patiently (?!?) in the ICU waiting area.

The surgery is expected to last about 6 hours.

As we toured the Monterey area for a great place to eat lunch low and behold we found the perfect one... Bubba Gump Shrimp! The restaurant was full of movie relics, Forrest Gump treasures and served great food! The metal sign was a way to make the waiter stop. When you were in need of something, just flip the sign and it read "Stop Forrest Stop"!

Part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is housed on Cannery Row, the location of many old sardines and fishery factories. There were pictures and film shows explaining the history of the area. Drake loved all the colors of the sardine labels!

Road Trip!

Sunday, August 31, 2008. We were ready to get out of town. What better place than Monterey Bay. The trip was about 1 1/2 hours from Stanford with beautiful scenery all the way down. The coast was peaceful and full of energy as we watched the waves flow in from the bay. A perfect break from the reality of our trip here to Stanford, CA. We spent much of the day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Drake fell in love with the otters. Drake was taking lots of pictures for his scrap book. The aquarium was was full of great exhibits and an aqua petting zoo. Drake was able to touch many forms of star fish and other sea wildlife.

Maybe Drake is spending too much time with his California Buddies! Yes, Drake wanted a MoHawk! Our buddy Joel in Peoria, IL who set up this blog site started encouraging Drake to get a MoHawk before the surgery. Drake told him "No Way" and said he was crazy! Drake was sharing that story with his many new friends here in California and they too thought it would be cool. So Thursday morning Drake woke up saying "I want a Mohawk!" We could not believe it. It soon became a passion for him and asked when he could have it done! Carol set up the appointment with a fellow hair dresser friend. The appointment had to be changed several times but we finally got it done! Drake was thrilled! He now is sporting a new California look!

Saturday Drake was ready for a little venturing out. We headed for the Hiller Aviation Museum not too far from the house. Drake loved the old and new planes on display. He was able to sit in the cockpit of an old 747 and "fly" the plane. Drake was amazed at the size of the plane and the fact it had stairs in it! It was a perfect break from the very long week of testing!

A Very Long Day...

Friday, August 30 was a very, very long day. During the Cerebral Angiogram Drake was sedated. He then spent an hour in the recovery area and 6 hours in the day hospital after the test was preformed. Drake's heart rate and blood pressure was running usually high so they wanted to make sure he was stable before returning home. We arrived back at the house at 12:30 am Saturday morning. Drake slept in Saturday morning and woke up with his usual smile.

Friday.. The Last Day of Testing Before the Surgery

We arrived Friday August 29 at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital about 10:20 am. Drake was scheduled for a Cerebral Angiogram at 11:00 am. The check in went well and they were pleased Drake's IV line was still working great! Dr. Chen was Drake's Anathesiologist. He was wonderful to work with and put Drake at ease. There always seem to be one person each day that went above and beyond for Drake. Today it was Dr. Chen! He informed us of the procedure and process that would unfold. Unfortunately our 11:00am appointment turn into a 1:00 pm appointment. At 1:00 pm we were told there was an emergency and there would be a two hour wait. We expressed our concern about Drake having no food since 10:00pm the night before and only 3 ounces of water at 7 am that morning. Our 3:00pm turn into a 4:15 test. It was a very long day. Drake was listening to his music and we kept him entertained.

Friday August 29, 2008 started out with Drake's new buddy David, a student from Oregon State University and a friend of Meredeth. David shared his Hot Red Mustang Convertible with Drake and let him get behind the wheel! Drake felt CA Cool! The day started out with a way cool attitude!

Amanda and Alana Hitchell have been apart of Drake’s life since he was just a baby. In fact when the ladies both went away to college we were at a total loss to find someone Drake loved to see! Amanda met Drake first when he was very young and then we were excited that she had a younger sister that would like to babysit after she went away to college. I think there were times Drake was glad we were going out so he could see his friends. The Hitchell family will always hold a special place in our hearts!

We have been adopted by a wonderful family here in Stanford, CA. Carol Malnick and her daughter Meredith have opened their beautiful home in Palo Alto, CA for us to share and enjoy during Drake’s stay here at Stanford. What a BLESSING! We come home to beautiful gardens, a lovely home and great soft beds! Carol and Meredith have spoiled Drake from the moment he walked into their door! They are both cheerful happy people with great big hearts! I can go on forever about their generous spirit and compassion. They are truly a Gift from God. As you can see from the picture, they surprised Drake with an Ironman costume. Drake keeps telling Carol he is going to design a robot that will pick up laundry and clean his room, a robot just like Ironman! He has promised Carol that she can have one too!

Meet Max the Rocket Guy

Max the Rocket Guy. When Drake starts talking about his robots and rockets he now refers to his new friend Max. Max works here at Stanford University and a local tech company. He came over to the Malnick’s home Monday night to show off the rocket he shot off in the dessert. That’s what Max does, he builds robots and rockets. “Very Cool” Drake states after he watches the video of Max shooting all kind a rockets.

Drake met with Robert Dicks today (8/28) after lunch at the Stanford Cafeteria. Robert is the Senior Manager for Media Relations at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. Drake and Robert had a lot in common as they shared some stories. They both love John Wayne and old western movies. Drake was wearing his genuine faux snake skin boots today and certainly could play the part. Robert asked if the hospital could do a story on him and Moya Moya. Drake quickly replied "sure!" as they chatted some more about Drake's favorite things. As we walked away from the meeting Drake told us "I like that guy!".

I Can't Reach My Nose...

"Daddy hold my nose!" As we were walking down one of the hallways Drake did not like the smell of the antiseptic they were using in this particular spot. Dad and Mom didn't notice much put it drove Drake crazy. Drake could not reach his nose because he had the IV central line in one hand and a blood draw patch on the inside elbow of the other! The smell quickly passed but I thought the picture of the two of them was hilarious!

Shortly after Mom and Dad promised a no needle day on Thursday Aug 28 we were told Drake needed blood drawn for the pre-surgery work-up. Ok... who is going to tell him we were wrong! As we walked down the hallway mom finally confessed she made a mistake and he was on his way to give blood and a needle was needed to get it done. "Just tell them to use the smallest needle" as he continued casually down the hallway. When we walked into the bright cheerful room with fun pictures on the walls his friendly lab technician put him at ease. She used the smallest needle and Drake watch the whole thing! We encouraged he to look away but he was tough! We gave her an A+ for the day. We knew when we met her she was going to be good and proved us all right!
